San Francisco — April 15, 2021— The Association of Asian American Investment Managers (AAAIM) is proud to announce our first ever Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI) Cohort, launching in New York City this year, with cohorts in other markets to follow. Our research shows that too many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) plateau at mid-career level due to lack of institutional programs and limited access to career development opportunities because of the “model minority” myth. AAPIs are represented well in top educational institutions, and in junior ranks of many investment firms. However, there is a vast under-representation of AAPIs in senior roles relative to the size of the professional workforce within the financial and investment industry.

In order for the industry to become more inclusive, these are the types of professional development programs we all need to support.” Our New York City Cohort will officially kick off in May in conjunction with the Asian Pacific American Heritage month. This program consists of a select group of mid-career, high potential leaders identified through an application and interview process for participation.

AAAIM’s Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI) program was created to help Asian American and Pacific Islanders break the “Bamboo Ceiling” in the investment field. “We can no longer be silent about our needs for professional representation. AAPI performance in asset management from our research indicates that we are fully capable of leadership, yet the demographic statistics of senior roles show that we are vastly underrepresented,” states Gordon C.C. Liao, ELI Committee Founder and Chair, AAAIM Vice Chair, and founding Board Member. AAAIM ELI Cohort participants will receive professional development through workshops, one on one ‘match made’ mentorship, participate in a group initiative to contribute to the AAPI community, and will be recognized at our 2021 AAAIM conference in September at the Four Seasons hotel in San Francisco.
